Huawei P40: Price, Release Date, and Specifications in 2020.

Although the model that attracts attention and offers the best performance in the Huawei P40 series is the P40 Pro, the smartphone that gives this series its name has features and capabilities that are not lower than it. More than anything else, this phone has two key features. The first is that it is more affordable, and the second is that it comes in smaller sizes. Thanks to these, it is likely to find buyers. In this article, we will give you a quick review regarding the P40.

 Design & Display.

Huawei P40 also targets those who want a compact phone like last year's P30. While the two phones are roughly the same size in terms of surface area, the P40 model is noticeably thicker at 8.5 millimeters. Moreover, in terms of weight, it is slightly ahead with 175 grams. Despite these increases, the Huawei P40 is still a small phone that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and can be used. Moreover, when you take it in your hand, it looks very stylish and the pleasure of use is at a higher point.

Of course, the Huawei P40 is a phone that is lighter, thinner, and has a small surface area than the P40 Pro. However, an important design element that makes the P40 Pro look more stylish is the curved front panel. The screen of the P40 Pro curves towards the long edges, while the screen glass curves towards the edges on the top and bottom sides. This makes the phone look more stylish. The P40 model has a flat-screen. However, as mentioned above, the Huawei P40 is a smartphone that feels very stylish and pleasant.

The phone back reflects the light like a mirror and creates pleasant images. We see that the glass-covered back is quite generous to fingerprints. The rectangular camera module in the upper left corner protrudes quite a bit. When you use the phone on a flat surface, you will see that the phone will move with your touches. Let's say that the camera module is home to three lenses, as well as a dual-LED flash. Huawei logo is placed on the horizontal axis.

On the right side of the phone are the volume keys and the power button. These are slightly higher than normal, easily accessible. There is a red-colored line on the power button. In this way, it is possible to distinguish the keys manually, making use easier. On the lower edge, there is a USB-C port, speaker, microphone, nano-SIM, and Nano Memory card tray. There is a second microphone on the upper edge.

The Huawei P40 Pro is water and dust resistant, certified by IP68. The Huawei P40 stands behind in this respect. The phone has IP53 certification. So it looks dust and splash resistant.

As far as display is concerned, Huawei P40 comes with a 6.1 OLED display from corner to corner.  This screen hole takes up an area that gets more noticeable than the P40 Pro when you're viewing a video or playing games in full screen. Still, we can say that this screen hole did not scratch our eyes during the entire time we use this phone. It occupies 86.3% of the front of the device. Huawei P40 has 1080 x 2340 resolution with 422 PPi.

This screen with OLED technology offers high brightness and vivid colors. There is no 90Hz refresh rate or HDR10 support on the P40 Pro's display. Also, the resolution is lower with 1080 x 2340 pixels. However, as the screen is smaller, pixel density at 422 PPI can be up to par with that of the P40 Pro. You can change the color mode and temperature of the screen in settings. In addition to preset color profiles such as Normal and Vivid, you can adjust the color temperature as you wish, and choose between warm or cool. We preferred Live mode while using it. In this way, the visual experience offered by the screen reaches the highest level.

Like other flagship Huawei phones, the P40 has a single speaker. However, this speaker delivers a higher intensity and quality sound than expected. This way, you don't need an external speaker while watching videos on YouTube or Netflix. The headphones that come out of the box meet the needs in general. Since there is no 3.5mm headphone jack, you can use a USB-C tip headset or obtain a USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter. Of course, FreeBuds 3 wireless headphones also get along fine with the Huawei P40.

Operating System and Process.

The phone offers extremely fast and powerful processors.  Huawei P40 offers a good processor for daily use. The P40 powered by the Kirin 990 processor like its big brother P40 Pro. This flagship processor, announced by Huawei last fall, has been found in high-end smartphones since then. Thanks to this processor, the Huawei P40 offers performance worthy of a flagship phone. Indeed, the speed and fluidity of the phone is at the same level as the P40 Pro. It also draws a good graphic in the game. In benchmark tests, the Huawei P40 seems to be slightly behind the Pro, but manages to get roughly the same level of results as it.

Regarding the GPU, Huawei P40 has the Mali-G76 MP16

In Geekbench 5, the CPU scored 756 for single-core and 2971 for multicores.
.
According to the operating system, Huawei P40 comes with Android 10 based EMUI 10 .1 installed. This phone is a Huawei AppGallery phone, so it has Huawei's own app store instead of the Google Play Store. At the same time, there are no apps like Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube that we are used to seeing on a regular Android phone. We have reported on the Huawei P40 lite and Huawei P40 Pro review articles we have previously published about how the user experience is offered on phones with Huawei's own mobile services. You can check out those reviews for details.

In general, to summarize, contrary to popular belief, the Huawei P40 performs many tasks comfortably, just like phones with other Huawei mobile services. If you are not too dependent on Google's apps and services, you shouldn't have any trouble. Even if you use Gmail and other services, there are alternatives you can use. On the other hand, you can install popular applications such as Netflix, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter from third-party application sources. Huawei AppGallery is more than enough for popular domestic applications.

Security and Ports.

On the security side, we see the in-screen fingerprint reader. The speed and responsiveness of this unit is good. There is also face recognition and it provides more comfortable use. However, we usually used the in-screen fingerprint reader and we were satisfied with it. The phone also supports the classical unlocking methods such as pattern and passcode.

As of ports, the device supports Bluetooth 5 and NFC. It supports VoLTE and WiFi Calling. It also has no support for a 3.5mm headphone jack as we mentioned above.

Battery and charging.

Huawei P40 provides a powerful Li-Po 3800mAh battery. And the phone offers fast charging.

Considering the daily general usage scenario of this battery, it can easily take a day off. This scenario involves making a few phone calls, texting, using social networking apps like Twitter and Instagram, browsing the web, taking photos or videos. When the screen brightness is at 80 percent, it is possible to watch TV over the Internet for about 8 hours over Wi-Fi. It may be possible to increase this time to 10 hours by reducing the brightness of the screen. It will also offer up to two days of operation with the phone's battery sparing.

Even the 40W charging adapter comes out of the box of the P40 Lite, while the 18W charging adapter comes out of the Huawei P40's box. However, considering the battery of the phone, this charging adapter works fast enough. While it reaches a charge of 60 percent in about half an hour, the battery is fully charged in about 1.5 hours.

While the Huawei P40 Pro has features such as wireless charging and reverse wireless charging, the Huawei P40 does not have these features. The absence of wireless charging is not a huge loss, but it provides practicality. At the same time, we see the wireless charging feature in many phones in this price line. The P40 is one step behind in this respect.

Camera.

Huawei P40 has a- triple-camera on the rear as clarified: 50Mp ( wide with f\1.9),16MP( ultrawide with f\2.2, 8MP( telephoto with f\2.4). Huawei P40 has a 32MP wide front-facing camera with f\2.2 with an IR sensor.  The cameras come with LED flash, AI support, and HDR. HDR technology will help you when there's sunlight behind you. HDR will edit the photo and balance the brightness.

The P40 also has a handy Camera app. There is a zoom setting on the right side or at the bottom according to your grip. There is a maximum of 30x zoom here. In addition, 0.5 times wide-angle and 3 times optical zoom are among the settings. At the same time, we see artificial intelligence supported scene modes. Like the P40 Pro, you can take beautiful Moon photos by zooming in on the P40 on a full moon. The P40 is not bad either, although what we shot with the P40 Pro seems a little better.

Let's continue with the camera application. There are settings such as flash, filter, Expert AI on one side of the screen. There is also a link to Huawei's artificial intelligence-powered display engine. This place seems ideal for scanning QR codes and similar tools. Pro mode is rich in controls. RAW photo recording is available here. In addition, many shooting modes are also available on the Huawei P40. If you want to take 50-megapixel resolution photos here is the High Definition mode, which is also required for this.

Maybe it doesn't have as advanced camera capabilities as the Huawei P40 Pro. However, the Huawei P40 does not fall short of its big brother in taking beautiful pictures. Under adequate lighting conditions, you can take vivid, bright and pleasing photos. If you like vibrant tones, you'll love the pictures taken by the P40. HDR performance is also good. Smoothing on the face does a little too much in portrait shots. This situation causes losses in detail. However, this does not matter much, as the general beauty is looked at rather than the details in portrait shots.

Thanks to the Super Macro mode, the P40 allows you to take pictures by getting very close to the subject. Focusing is fine for shooting this way. We can say that we also like the overall macro performance. Coming to low light performance, the P40 does well here too. In the default shooting mode, the exposure is kept a little high. Although this increases the brightness, it creates some noise effects. Decreasing the exposure will give slightly better results. On the other hand, it is good in terms of brightness, the light noise effect can be ignored when shooting indoors that is not very bright.

The telephoto lens also does a good job. The noise effect is a bit high in low light, 3x zoom photos. Although there is an optical image stabilization system in the telephoto lens, it would be better to keep the phone as stable as possible.

It has a 32-megapixel, f / 2.0 camera, and a Time-of-Flight camera on the front. This ensures that the depth of the field is captured well with the help of the equipment in portrait shots. Selfie photos taken with the P40 will delight you. The P40 seems to be successful in covering the imperfections when using facial beautification.

On the video side, we see that different formats up to 4K shooting at a speed of 60 frames per second are supported. Stability is fine even in the highest format, not like professional camcorders. However, when you move the camera in the horizontal axis, there is a little bit of jam in transitions, which we guess is due to the image stabilization system. The sound recording quality is also fine.

Conclusion.

The Huawei P40 Pro is a phone with eye-catching design and high-end cameras. At the same time, the screen of that phone won our appreciation. However, to have that phone, you need to pay around 1,500USD. The Huawei P40, with its price of 700USD, manages to offer many aspects of that phone that we like. The price is already at the same level as the flagship phones, and they feel it gives is in the same direction.

For those who prefer a flat screen and do not wish to use a very large phone, the Huawei P40 will be a "hit" phone. It is a great pleasure to grip and use the phone in the palm of your hand. Moreover, at least the backside of it manages to attach the P40 Pro to a large extent. It's good that Huawei brought the same color options for both phones.

In terms of performance, the P40 is not lagging behind the P40 Pro. On the battery side, it offers the performance that will make a day out easily. It is a phone that meets the needs of gaming. The Android experience is different from that of other branded smartphones, but getting used to a Google-free Android experience is not too difficult. With the camera system, photos and videos can be taken that will satisfy all conditions.

If 620USD remains in your pocket, you will use a smaller phone. However, you will give up the body that offers better water and dust resistance, wireless charging features, a higher resolution curved screen, and a more capable camera system. However, we can say that you will feel the feeling of using a high-end Android phone. What do you think? Have you used the smartphone? Do you recommend it?
