Huawei Mate XS: Design, Price, and Specifications.

February of last year, we witnessed the introduction of the Mate X, Huawei's first foldable phone, at an event we personally attended. At that time, we could only see this device behind a glass. This foldable phone was expected to be released in the summer of 2019, but the problems Samsung had with the first foldable phone caused Huawei to step on the brakes, and the Mate X was only available at the end of the year in a geography that was generally limited to China. Earlier this year, Huawei introduced the Mate XS, the follower of the Mate X at the same place and on the same date. Although it is almost the same in appearance, this foldable phone, which is stated to be more robust, was introduced with updated components to the requirements of its time. In this article, we will give you a quick review regarding Huawei Mate XS.

Huawei Mate XS: Design, Price, and Specifications.

Design &Display.

There are some design elements that we are used to in flagship phones. Thin profile, glass and metal combination design, robust screen glass, water, and dust resistance are the first to come to mind. Although the Huawei Mate XS is at the level of a flagship phone with its price and hardware components and even exceeds this line with its price, these design elements we have mentioned are not found in the Mate XS, in fact, it has the opposite qualities in every respect.

First of all, the Huawei Mate XS is a heavy phone. 300 gr. weight of today's 200 gr. The smartphone is around 50 percent above the weighted average. In terms of thickness, we can say that it is thicker than normal, taking into account its value of 11 millimeters when the device is folded. However, if opened, it becomes even thinner than tablets that are described as thin, with a thickness of 5.4 millimeters.

The Mate XS has a body basically made of aluminum. The screen is made of plastic to allow it to be folded. In this respect, it differs from today's upper-class phones. For those who are used to the hardness of the glass, the idea of a plastic screen may seem a little strange, but we can say that we don't feel the difference much when using it. Huawei also placed a protective film on the screen. We recommend that you do not remove it. This movie seems to be drawn easily. We hope Huawei is offering replacement protective films for this as well.

In addition, in order to protect the screen of the phone, a buffer has been added that wraps around the edges of the device and also prevents the screen from fringing with the surface when the phone is placed on a surface by raising the edges. In fact, in the test product we received, this bumper was attached to the phone. Huawei also used glue to keep this bumper firmly on the phone. Thanks to this bumper, the edges, and hinge parts are also protected. At the same time, it adds to the grip of the phone, although it increases the thickness a little. Due to its complex structure, the Huawei Mate XS does not have a feature that we are used to seeing in today's high-end phones, such as water and dust resistance. Huawei has taken the necessary precautions to prevent dust from entering the phone. You also have to be careful about water.

The Huawei Mate XS has almost the same width as the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which we use with a transparent silicone case when closed. Its height is slightly higher. As a result, it's a standard phone format, although it's thick and wide, it doesn't have a form that's too uncomfortable and difficult to use. When opened, it turns into a large enough screen tablet and becomes thinner and more comfortable to use than today's tablets. Especially when opened, the part at the back that hosts the camera acts as a handle, allowing the foldable phone, which becomes a tablet, to be comfortably gripped.

To open the Mate XS 'screen, you have to press the button located on the back, just below the camera group. Thanks to this mechanical button, the mechanism that holds the screen on the body is released and the screen opens outward. When we gave the Mate XS to some friends to review while it was turned on, they tried to fold the screen inwards instead of folding it out. For this reason, it is necessary to know the screen and learn how the folding mechanism is before using the device. When the device is turned off, the wings of the screen hold together and there is no gap in between.

As far as display is concerned,  Huawei Mate XS comes with an 8.0 Foldable OLED  corner-to-corner screen. The aspect ratio of the screen is very close to 1: 1, that is, square format. This does not cause much trouble while using apps or reading things. Only because of the problem that Android apps are not optimized for large screens in general, the apps do not take full advantage of the large screen space. The brightness and color vibrancy of the OLED screen is very good. So much so that watching videos or playing games is very enjoyable when the Mate XS is on. We guess that purchasers of this device would not prefer to use tiered while using this device for entertainment.  It occupies 86.9% of the front of the device. Huawei Mate XS has a 2200 x 2480 resolution with 414 PPi.

When the device is folded, a 6.6 inch, 1148 x 2480 pixel resolution, and 19.5: 9 aspect ratio screen is available on the front. This is at the same level as the screen parameters offered by high-end smartphones. There is also a 6.3-inch corner-to-corner screen section at the back, but this screen is only used effectively during camera use. There is no possibility to navigate through this screen in the user interface by switching to the screen on the back of the device whenever you want.

We said that the protective film on the plastic screen of the Mate XS is somewhat susceptible to scratches. Although the plastic surface appears to be stronger than we anticipated, we recommend that you do not hold the Huawei Mate XS together with keys, coins, or similar hard or sharp objects when carrying it in a pocket or bag. When the screen is turned on, a very slight wrinkle is noticeable where the hinge part is, but let's note that this is mostly caused by the reflection on the screen surface.

We mentioned above that when the screen is on, it has an aspect ratio close to 1: 1. This causes considerable thick black bands to appear at the top and bottom when watching videos. However, we cannot say that this situation casts a huge shadow on the video viewing experience. It is a great pleasure to watch videos on this device with its high resolution, deep blacks, and vivid colors.

Huawei has included a single speaker on this phone. However, as with other flagship phones, this single speaker delivers sound powerful and full enough to rival stereo speaker systems. You can also connect headphones using the USB-C port, but the best thing would be to choose wireless headphones such as Huawei's FreeBuds 3 or FreeBuds 3i. These headphones offer easy connection with the device loaded with EMUI 10 and offer the opportunity to use them practically.

Operating System and Processor

Huawei offers this phone at the same level as its high-end smartphones. The device has the Kirin 990 processor, which is developed with 7nm + architecture and we have seen in the latest flagship phones such as Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro. This processor also has 5G support. The octa-core processor also houses the Mali-G76 MP16 GPU.

The Huawei Mate XS offers the same level of performance as the Kirin 990 processor phones we have experienced before. The device offers a fast and fluid user interface. User interface changes also happen quickly when you fold the screen and open it. Web sites and applications scrolling smoothly. It also offers good support for the game.

In the Geekbench test, we see that this phone achieves roughly the same results as the S20 Ultra.  the Note 20 Ultra scored 951 for single-core and 2801 for multicores.

According to the operating system, Huawei Mate XS runs on Android 10 with Huawei's famous UI, EMU user interface. Since the device we have is a tester, a test software was running on it. Therefore, it would not be correct to make clear judgments about the software experience. For example, the current Netflix app that we could run properly on the Huawei P40 Pro was not working on this device. However, we think this is due to the device we have. Those who buy the Mate XS will be waiting for application support as we mentioned in our Huawei P40 Pro review. You can download any application from Huawei AppGallery, which is rich in native application support. You can also use alternative sources such as APKPure or websites (for Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.) to download application files.

The EMUI 10 user interface has been arranged to fit the Mate XS's almost square screen. In addition, applications such as Settings take advantage of the large screen. The menu is positioned in a column to the left of the screen, with more steps shown on the right side of the screen with a larger area. So Huawei makes good use of the big screen as much as possible, at least in its own apps and user interface. In the browser application, when we switch to the big screen form, we come across a tabbed interface as in a desktop internet browser.

Security and Ports

On the security side, Due to the use of a plastic surface, the Mate XS does not have an in-display fingerprint reader. Instead, a fingerprint reader is integrated into the power button on the side of the device. Whether you use it on or off, authentication is fast with this power button. There is also facial recognition, but the security level is unadvisable since it's 2D. The Mate XS also supports the classical unlocking methods such as pattern and passcode.

As of ports, the Mate XS supports Bluetooth 5 and NFC. It also supports VoLTE and WiFi Calling. It comes with USB-C. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack.

 Battery and Charging

Huawei Mate XS comprises a powerful Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 4500mAh. At this point, the smartphone has the same battery capacity as the Galaxy S20. It has more capacity than the Huawei's latest flagship the P40 Pro Plus (4200) and iPhone Pro Max (3969). This phone also offers fast charging.

Considering it as a tablet, this battery capacity may not be sufficient. However, with normal intensity use, the Mate XS 'battery can easily be removed from morning to night in a day. The 55W fast charging adapter is one of the strengths of this phone. It states that it exhibits up to 85 percent charging performance in just half an hour, which is roughly the case in the real world. With the charging adapter included in the box, it is possible to fill the phone in a considerable amount in a short time. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you take the Mate XS charging adapter with you on your travels. Wireless charging is naturally not available in this device.

 Camera

Huawei Mate XS has a Quad-camera on the rear as clarified: 16Mp ( utrawide with f\2.2),40MP( wide with f\1.8 it has OIS, and Laser AF), 12MP( telephoto with f\2.4), and ToF sensor for depth. This camera also has support for optical image stabilization.  You can use the Quad-camera on the rear to shoot well selfies.

successfully reflects the camera experience of its high-end phones. The vividness of the colors and the brightness of the images are at a satisfactory level. The amount of noise remains low even in low light. Good work comes out in close-ups too. We don't see an explosion in shots of flowers and other colorful objects. Image quality is not compromised at 3x optical zoom and 5x optical zoom. However, we have to say that the details are lost. The Mate XS also does a good job of shooting moving subjects. We also liked the Mate XS for portrait photos.

You can also use the Mate XS 'four cameras for selfies. If you are going to take a selfie, you have to turn the back of the device and use the back part of the screen as the viewfinder. You can see the preview of the photos you have taken just below the viewfinder area. In this respect, the screen behind is used efficiently. Similarly, if you are going to take a picture of a person, you can open the dual-screen view so that the person can see him on the screen behind him and determine his pose.

On the video side, 4K video recording up to 60 frames per second is done. Steady video shots are made thanks to the presence of optical image stabilization. The sound recording is also of good quality. The autofocus is also good when shooting video. As a result, a video quality similar to that of professional video cameras is achieved.

The camera system of a product purchased with such a high amount of money would be expected to be good. Fortunately, the Huawei Mate XS meets this expectation comfortably with its four cameras.
