Motorola is abandoning its Moto G range a bit to introduce the Edge, a mid-range curved-screen smartphone that is good everywhere, without excelling anywhere.

rawing from the high-end market for 4 years, Motorola is back in 2020 with two new models called Edge + and Edge. If the first should not be in the USA, the second made the trip well and comes to tease well-established players from the middle and the high-end.

Positioned at 750USD, it is a perfect opponent of the Realme X50 Pro , the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 or the recently announced Poco F2 Pro. In this article, we will give you a quick review regarding the Edge Plus.

Design & display.

For its return to the top of the smartphone basket, Motorola does not really innovate in terms of design and relies on codes that have been proven in recent years. It must be said that the execution, as classic as it is, is quite successful.

Unfortunately, there is a flip side to the coin: to curve the edges, Motorola had to thicken the shell (9.3 mm thick). Another disappointment linked to the panel: the ignition and volume control buttons are placed well back from the natural position of the fingers. An issue we have experienced with the Huawei Mate 30 Pro .

On the back, the Edge offers a series of 4 sensors placed horizontally. The latter are not placed in an island - which is the trend among a good number of manufacturers. In fact, they do not protrude very much, but do not allow the smartphone to lie flat on a table.

As far as display is concerned, Motorola Edge Plus comes with a 6.7 OLED display, with 90-degree curved edges. The company called this screen Endless Edge.  It occupies 95.5% of the front of the device. Motorola Edge Plus has a FHD+ (2340x1080) resolution with 385 PPi.

The aspect ratio of the screen is 21 by 9. And Motorola promises that thanks to this it will be convenient to work with the device with one hand. In passing, we want to note that the screen seems to have very thin upper and lower bezels.

Other technical characteristics include a refresh rate of 90 Hz. Modern flagships have 120 Hz, but in addition, increased power consumption. And 90 Hz is a reasonable compromise. The screen supports HDR10 +, and it will also have 10-bit color. Thus, a smartphone will be able to display more than a billion colors, while usually screens show only 60 million.

As for audio, as it tends to disappear, the 3.5mm mini-jack is indeed present on the Edge. Without being exceptional, it delivers sufficient power - except for the most demanding helmets. The distortion is excellent and the dynamics are wide. However, it stumbles on crosstalk, which results in degraded stereo reproduction.

The Motorola Edge offers two speakers: one on the lower edge, the second on the opposite side. Their sound is decent and powerful, but the stereo is set back, which gives a somewhat flat rendering. No wonder for a smartphone though.

Operating System Processor

Motorola Edge Plus comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. The Nova 7i CPU comes with 8 cores with 7nm build.

As for the Edge Plus GPU, Motorola Edge Plus has the Adreno 650. In Geekbench 5, the CPU scored 909 for single-core and 3308 for multicores.

PUBG game started with high settings with excellent smoothness. It also supports the Moto Game Time feature, which enables you to block notifications while gaming. It also enables you to take screenshots. You can also add additional buttons.

According to the operating system, Motorola Edge Plus runs on Android 10 with a UI very similar to stock Android.  It will allow you to customize and personalize your smartphone as much as possible. So, the company decided to make full use of the curved edges of the screen. With the help of swipes along the edges, you can open notifications, curtains, recent applications. And on a swipe to the center of the screen, a panel with applications will slide out in the same way as it is now with the Samsung Galaxy. Moto experience gestures will continue to be available, from turning on the flashlight with a simple hacking gesture to activating the camera with a twist of your wrist.

Also, the edges will overflow with notifications, calls, and the charging progress will also be displayed on them.

Along the way, it can be noted that Motorola offers to use the edges for control in games. For example, triggers are visible here.

Motorola Edge Plus goes with a quad-camera on the rear as clarified: 108Mp (wide with f\1.8), 16MP (ultra-wide with f\2.2), 8MP (telephoto with f\2.4) and TOF 3D, (depth). The cameras come with dual-LED flash and support OIS. Motorola Edge Plus has a 25MP wide front-facing camera with an f\2.0 with support for HDR and AF for marvelous shots.

When creating the camera, Motorola said that it tried to bring the quality of images as close as possible to those of DSLRs. The main camera is a 108 MP module. One of the highlights of the camera, judging by the promo, is the advanced stabilization when shooting video. We need to test! The smartphone supports 3x optical zoom. Along the way, it is important to note that optical stabilization is also present mainly in the telephoto lens. Accordingly, when shooting with magnification, the pictures will come out sharp. The smartphone also has a ToF 3D sensor and an advanced macro mode.

108 MP works like Xiaomi, that is, it compresses pixels 4 in 1, so frames come out in 27 MP size. But, apparently, the smartphone compresses them additionally for compactness, so the proposed test demo images are 16 MP in size.

By the way, like many new flagships, it is possible to take a frame right during video shooting. It will be 20 MP resolution. The camera will generally have a lot of highlights. For example, a video portrait function will appear, that is, it will be possible to blur the background when shooting a video.

In the still, the main camera provides photos with quite good details and sharpness. The colors and saturated, but sometimes are a bit cold, other times are a bit warm. It depends on different circumstances.

The Ultra-Wide lens provides very good details and contrast. The devices support 3x optical zoom, and the results are good. It also supports 10x digital zoom, but the quality of the photos is a bit noisy.

Portrait photos are satisfactory with saturated colors. But sometimes, it struggles with edge isolation.

The device supports Macro Photos, which enables you to take close-up photos and it provides acceptable results. By the way, you can also shoot videos in Macro mode.

Night mode performs well, and compared to normal mode, photos are less noisy.

The rear cameras shoot 4K@30fps with good stabilization and warm and saturated colors. By the way, it also shoots 6K@30fps videos. 6K videos will help you shoot videos and later edit it to cropped 4K or FHD with high quality. It also supports 720p@240fps.

The front-facing camera provides sharp photos with saturated colors.

The same thing applies to portrait photos. It provides satisfactory isolation. But the colors are a bit colder.

The front-facing camera also supports slo-mo videos.

In fact, The smartphone really turned out to be interesting. There was a desire to hold it in my hands. So far, only one clear drawback is visible: the company did not mention water protection. Motorola smartphones usually come with a splash-proof feature, but that's not IP68. Other disadvantages are also easily noticeable against the background of Samsung flagships, for example. But for the first flagship in 4 years, I think Motorola did very well. What do you think? Tell us your thoughts on the comments section below.
