Two designs have defined the last decade in laptops. The first decade was about the MacBook Air that dominated the first half of the 2010s and inspired a sea of similarity. However, the second half was about Dell's XPS 13. The original slim bezel, small footprint laptop started a trend that is now common everywhere.

However, after four years of iteration, Dell baked something new. Something fresh. Something that takes everything we have loved for a long time about design and brings it to a new era.

All good changes, with a 16:10 aspect ratio, edge-to-edge keyboard, and more compact and power-efficient 10nm processors that keep Intel even thinner than before.

Unfortunately, many of the classic XPS 13 disadvantages are still here, with limited ports and true hot-running tendency. This remains one of the best laptops in the world, but next time Dell will have to do more to stay ahead of the competition. In this article, we will give you a quick review regarding the Dell XPS 13.

 Design & Display.

It's not for nothing that I would say the 2019 XPS 13, which is bigger inside and smaller outside, is as good as a 13-inch laptop has.

Of course, a 13-inch ultrabook isn't the best laptop for everyone - others will want the power of gaming or creative laptops, the size of a larger screen, or the flexibility of the more ports you get with the XPS 15 or 17 - but those who are satisfied with the ultrabook's inevitable compromise. Seldom did Dell take the format better.

This year's XPS 13 follows the rhythm of small changes each year, with two major changes both taken from the 2019 XPS 13 2-in-1 product: a bigger, longer screen; and a larger, larger keyboard. All in a smaller body, of course.

The Dell XPS 13 2020 makes small but welcome improvements to the most attractive laptop design. Dell's flagship laptop remains pleasing to look at and to use, with a mother-of-pearl 1.27kg aluminum chassis and thin 0.58-inch bezels.

Dell has finally managed to pinch the XPS 13's webcam to the top edge since last year's model (bye-bye, nose shot), and it looks just as elegant here. On top of that, the company managed to make the bezels even thinner.

As far as display is concerned, the Dell XPS 13 2020 cuts off the thick bottom bezel from previous models, creating a truly 4-sided 13.4-inch Infinity Edge display that delivers a 91.5% screen-to-body ratio. The result is an even more immersive version of one of the most gorgeous laptop screens ever.

With a captivating 91.5% screen-to-body ratio, our XPS 13 1920 x 1200 display has done everything from movies and TV shows to work papers to pop with color and detail. We especially love the deep black screen, which gave text in apps like Slack and Google Docs distinctly, an inky boldness that made things very easy to read. The XPS 13's touchscreen was handy for quickly navigating between chat conversations and Chrome tabs, and zooming in on web pages was instant.

Switching to the 16:10 aspect ratio really helps. The extra vertical screen space leaves a little extra room to breathe, especially on the otherwise 12-inch or 13-inch models, and is particularly helpful if you use Netflix to work instead of watching. Losing the bottom bezel doesn't hurt either, adding to the clean and modern impression of Dell's design.

The XPS 13 is also a great movie machine, as we learned while watching the epic endgame battle for Avengers: Endgame (and try not to cry on that Captain America scene). Special effects such as Iron Man's orange, repulsive explosions or the bright blue thunder of Thor's hammer, laced with color, and we could make out every little crease, scar, and bristle on Thanos' giant purple face. However, we also noticed that the XPS 13's screen was a bit glossy - we saw our own reflection as well as a few fingerprints near the top of the display when watching a movie in a sunny room.

The impressive color and brightness that we saw while working and watching movies were largely backed up by our laboratory tests. Dell labs reproduced 107.5% of the sRGB color gamut, placing it on par with the new MacBook Air 2020 (113%) and the HP Elite Dragonfly (117%).

The XPS 13's 1080p configuration yielded an impressive 417 nits average brightness in our labs, beating both the MacBook Air (386 nits) and Dragonfly (373 nits). However, the 4K model has noticeably tarnished compared to both the 1080p version and the competition, coming in at just 301 nits.

Moving from the screen to the keyboard deck, the design continues to follow the "more important" philosophy. There is no one-millimeter clearance left in the keyboard deck.

The keyboard is inspired by the XPS 13 2-in-1 look, although not in sight. The keycaps are larger and there is less space between each. They now extend to the edges of the keyboard support.

The power button (and the built-in fingerprint reader), once located to the right of the layout, is now integrated into the top right, just like MacBooks. Another small change to the layout that we appreciate is the full-size left and right arrow keys. Previous XPS keyboards had half-size keys when Page Up and Page Down were filling in spaces. This often causes accidental skips on the page.

It has quickly become one of my favorite notebook keyboards for typing.

Part of the keyboard we are glad Dell didn't redesign is the real feeling of pressing the key. Instead of going the way of butterfly mechanisms (XPS 13 2-in-1), they still have 1mm of travel and a fast mechanism. Dell made the right choice here, as we've seen even Apple moving away from their butterfly keyboards. It has quickly become one of our favorite notebook keyboards for typing.

The same goes for the touchpad, which has grown in total size from last year's model. Dell also tried to narrow the click mechanism to make it quieter. We prefer it to be softer though, but the tracking and gesture support is excellent as always.

This is complemented by a textured, padded laptop wrist rest that makes it easy to bounce documents for hours at a time. We passed the 10-finger typing test at 94 words per minute (roughly my norm) with 95% accuracy, and we never gave a convulsive crunch on the keys.

The XPS 13 ′ touchpad is 17% larger than last year's model, and the extra real estate made it easy to scroll up and down Google Docs or shrink to zoom in on web pages without any friction. Common Windows 10 gestures, like swiping up with three fingers to multitask or swiping left to switch apps, worked like a breeze.

Operating System and Process.

The Dell XPS 13 2020 lineup features the latest 10th Gen Intel processors, including the fast Core i7-1065G7 U series chip packed in our review unit. The Dell laptop handled my daily multitasking workload without stuttering, whether I was jumping between more than a dozen Chrome tabs on a Hangout call or jumping between Slack and Discord chats while writing articles on GDocs.

In the general Geekbench 5 benchmark test, our XPS 13 scored a strong 4847 score, nearly double the weaker Y Series Core i5-1030NG7 processor used in the MacBook Air. We tested the dragonfly on the old Geekbench 4.3 benchmark, where our Dell scored an impressive 19,053 points compared to HP's 14,701 points.

The 512GB solid-state drive packed in the XPS 13 copied about 5GB of files in 7.92 seconds at a transfer rate of 627MB per second. This beats the Dragonfly 512GB SSD, which lags slightly behind at 424MB per second.

You won't play the best PC games at high settings on the Dell XPS 13, but the Intel Iris Plus graphics used in mainstream laptops can still handle more basic games that play well with integrated graphics. On a Dell laptop, the racing game Dirt 3 was played at 58 frames per second. The XPS 13 Dirt 3 1080p performance is double that of the HP Dragonfly at 31 fps, and the laptop passed the MacBook Air benchmark in our Civilization VI test with a score of 18.7 versus 7 for the MacBook.

 Security and Ports.

For security, In the upper right corner of the XPS 13 (2020) there is a fingerprint scanner through which you can log in to Windows; the button also has a power-on function. The scanner works quickly, although sometimes (rarely) it does not respond to touch the first time. This is a known issue and can be resolved by updating Windows to the latest version and installing Dell drivers.

In terms of port options, Dell has spared on connectors. There are just two Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports - one on each side, both of the laptops can be charged. There is also a headphone jack and a microSD card slot. You will most likely have to lug around additional cables - which Dell does not deny because a USB-C to USB-A adapter is included.

The device comes with Bluetooth 5 and Wi-Fi 6, the latest standard for each. No 5G support - although Dell included this in its updated Latitude 9510, call this to turn it into next year's XPS iteration.

 Sound System.

The XPS 13 stereo speakers are loud but have mixed results when it comes to sound quality. Four Year Strong's crunchy "Crazy Pills" guitar riffs sounded muddy and bloated at maximum volume, although we were impressed with the amount of bass that filtered through the laptop's small speakers.

The more subdued indie pop from Beach Bunny's Dream Boy did a little better, with breeze guitars and flamboyant vocals in the mix. But after we turned up the volume, it still sounded too muted for us to like. The XPS 13 speakers are perfect for conference calls and movies, but serious music junkies will want to have a pair of the best headphones handy when it's time to rock.

 Battery and charging.

If you want long-term endurance, get the 1080p Dell XPS 13. This version of the Dell laptop lasted 12 hours and 39 minutes in our surf battery test. This makes the XPS 13 one of the most durable laptops in the world. The 1080p Dell XPS 13 outperforms the 2020 MacBook Air (9:31) and nearly outperforms the HP Elite Dragonfly (12:25).

Like many laptops with 4K sectors, the UHD version of the Dell XPS 13 is a solid choice when it comes to battery life. The 4K version of the Dell laptop only lasted 8 hours and 14 minutes. So you'll definitely want to keep your charger close at hand if you opt for the 4K version of this laptop.

If you're looking for a premium Windows Ultrabook and you have an unlimited budget, then the Dell XPS 13 (2020) is definitely worth considering. No competitor can match this 13-inch beast, which is built to the highest standard.

The XPS 13 doesn't differ much from other laptops with Intel Core i7 in terms of cost. This makes it far superior to the best models from HP, Microsoft, or Lenovo in terms of value for money.

The redesigned XPS 13 (2020) is still the best Ultrabook yet. Yes, other models can surpass it in some way, but in general, the XPS 13 is unmatched. With a stunning small form factor display, a gorgeous keyboard, and a powerful 10th Gen Intel Core processor, Dell is once again setting the industry standard. What do you think?
