Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2: Quick Review

Foldable phones had finally begun to meet consumers last year, after previous expectations, leaks, and gossip. However, the first members of a new product category had some difficulties with the disadvantage of being the first. It was actually a kind of trial board. Especially the first generation Galaxy Fold model, introduced by Samsung last year, was on the agenda due to the problems before it was released. In fact, Samsung delayed the launch of the product, reverted to rework, and resold the product in a more robust state. Fold Galaxy models were the first to arrive in the USA, but due to problems experienced delays output in the mentioned country was also canceled. Galaxy Z Flip, the first foldable Samsung phone to be sold around happened. Although this phone is in a different form, it has shown us the progress Samsung has made in the foldable screen system. We now see the advancements on this side present in the Galaxy Z Fold 2, with improvements in design and other areas. In this article, we will give you a quick review regarding the Z Fold 2.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2: Quick Review

  Design & Display.

Those who buy the Galaxy Z Fold 2 should first get used to using a thicker, narrower, and longer-form phone than a normal smartphone. Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a heavy phone at the same time when it is closed, like a phone, but in a very different form from the smartphone, you are used to until now. 280 gr. it goes well above the average of the smartphone. Weight is not a big problem when using the phone open, but you may feel tired after a while, especially during phone calls. For this reason, it would be good to have a headset with you during long phone calls. The negative effect of the body thickness, which is almost the thickness of two smartphones, on ergonomics is slightly eliminated thanks to the narrow structure of the phone. Although the screen is longitudinally, It is possible to use the numeric keypad or the virtual keyboard comfortably while using it with one hand. Of course, it's not that easy to access the upper parts of the screen.

When unfolded, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 turns into a slim tablet with an almost square form. In the open state, the body thickness decreases from 16.8 millimeters to 6.9 millimeters. In tablet form, it is not very troublesome to use with one hand, the fatigue time of the long grip is naturally lower than that of a tablet. Holding the Z Fold 2 horizontally or vertically while it is open does not make much difference in the aspect ratio. It's pretty much the same field of view, but if you hold it horizontally while watching a video, you will see that the camera hole located towards the right at the top covers a small part of the image.

Like other flagship Samsung phones, the Z Fold 2 has a combination of glass and metal. It comes in mystical black and mystic bronze colors and, like the Note 20 Ultra in the second color option, the glass on the back has a matte finish. This creates a pleasant feeling of use. We see that the three cameras on the back are lined up in a rectangular camera module in the vertical direction as in Note 20. An aluminum frame surrounds the edges. The outer surface of the cover is covered with glass like the back. Inside, we see that the foldable screen is covered with a special plastic material that Samsung calls Ultra-Thin Glass, with a glass layer inside.

Ultra-Thin Glass was first used in the Galaxy Z Flip model. The thin glass layer inside adds a little hardness to the screen surface and helps us to experience the touch screens we are used to by increasing the feeling of pressure on the fingertips during use. The same is the case here. And again, Samsung has placed the protective film over the folding screen from the beginning. Samsung strongly cautions that you do not remove this yourself. So much so that the limits of this guard reach below the bumper that surrounds the screen. There is no protective film only in the area where the camera is located, and the space here is not limited to the selfie camera as in the protective film covering the cover screen. Samsung did not cover the area above the selfie camera with film. This situation causes the refraction of light at the film boundaries and the recognition of two thin lines, especially in white background images. Meanwhile, the friction feeling while dragging is more due to the screen protective film, you feel that you are in contact with the plastic.

When closed, there is a conical gap between the two wings. Although Samsung has a solid hinge structure and the screen protector film extends to the edges and also protects it with the screen inside, try to carry the phone as small and free of hard particles as possible in pockets or bag pockets. Speaking of the hinge structure, the longer form of the hinge structure in the Z Flip, which is robust and allows the screen to open at different angles and stand stably, is in Z Fold 2. In this way, Z Fold 2 creates favorable situations for different usage scenarios in different formats called Flexible Mode. Selfie, video watching, photo and video capture, or video call with flexible models getting easier. The foldable screen inside is divided into two parts. One part shows the image and the other part of the controls. For example, if you want to watch something while eating and there is no stand next to you, you can fold the Z Fold 2 and ask whatever you want on a smaller screen. However, such a cruise does not satisfy the pleasure. If you want to watch something, we recommend that you have a stand with you and enjoy the larger viewing area on the screen inside.

Flexible mode provides more meaningful use in selfie, fast shooting, or video shooting. For example, when there was no tripod to shoot videos at home, we thought of using the Galaxy Z Fold 2. We folded the phone in a suitable position, placed it in a high place, and successfully shot. It is nice that it does not require a tripod in fast shots. Like Google Duo, using the screen in the video call service, which can be used as the built-in video call application of the Galaxy Z Fold 2, ensures your hands are free and allows you to easily access the controls of the Duo.

Due to the precision of the foldable screen inside, the hinge structure, and many other delicate components, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 cannot offer water and dust resistance. Still, we can say that the phone is very solid, and when turned off, it gives the feeling of solidity of a normal smartphone. In fact, the same goes for open use. There is no fluctuation in the hinge structure. Samsung has designed this unit very firmly and firmly. Internal gears and interlocking gears increase rigidity and stability. You hear a solid "plug" sound when you hang up the phone. However, you don't need to use that much force to bring the phone open. Samsung seems to have set the balance well. Fiber-bristle brushes placed inside the hinge structure also prevent small particles from escaping. During the time we've been using the phone, we haven't witnessed the presence of any small parts that could damage the screen inside, or the trouble this caused. Of course, admittedly, two days is a very short time.

As far as display is concerned, There are two screens like the original Galaxy Fold model. The space of the folding screen inside has been significantly increased compared to its predecessor. The screen frame has been thinned, most importantly, the half-notch-shaped structure has been removed and the screen hole and selfie camera placed here are included, which Samsung has started to prefer in most phones. This inner screen has a high screen-to-body ratio of 88.6 percent. It has 7.6 inches corner-to-corner, with a slightly closer aspect ratio to the square. The 1768 x 2208 pixel resolution provides a pixel density of 373 PPI. Considering the distance to the eye, this intensity provides enough sharp and clear images.

Samsung offers all the necessary conditions for this display to deliver the best image quality and multimedia experience. Dynamic AMOLED 2X capacitive touch screen is used. First of all, there is HDR10 + support, you can take advantage of this support on popular video services such as YouTube and Netflix. On the other hand, the 120 Hz screen that we started to see in the S20 and Note 20 series is also offered on the foldable screen inside. Samsung adjusts both the resolution and the refresh rate adaptively, so these two important elements of the screen differ according to the content. This situation has a positive effect on battery consumption. On YouTube videos, 1440p resolution videos can be watched in supported content.

One of the most curious questions will be the condition of the wrinkle on the screen inside. Yes, there is a wrinkle inside. We guess that the phone started to trace a little more on the hinge due to the on-off switch and it was used for a short time in other publications before us. How is the situation in long-term use, we cannot make a comment on this issue. However, when we look at the screen from a certain angle, wrinkles are noticed on backgrounds with predominant light colors or when light reflects off the surface of the screen. However, do not immediately make your face wrinkled. With the Galaxy Z Fold 2 open, you will usually be using it at a distance from your eyes and looking straight ahead. In this way, the visible effect of the crease in the middle of the screen on the image is reduced to almost zero.

The biggest difference between Z Fold 2 compared to its predecessor is that the size of the outer cover screen is enlarged considerably. The older generation had a small 4.6-inch screen. It does not cover the entire front face, it creates a strange appearance with large gaps above and below. Now, in line with today's trends, we see a screen with a thin bezel that covers almost the entire cover. The cover screen is Super AMOLED technology. Its deep blacks, vibrant colors, and high brightness ensure it offers as good a visual quality as the screen inside. There is no problem in using it under sunlight. It has a corner-to-corner length of 6.23 inches. With 25: 9 it has a rather unusual aspect ratio for a smartphone. The resolution is also 816 x 2260 pixels. You will find the opportunity to use the screen on the cover more thanks to its growing area. This screen works well for one-handed typing or making phone calls. However, this screen will not satisfy you while you are playing games, watching videos, or browsing social media. You will prefer to turn the phone on and use the big screen inside. In the meantime, you can take advantage of the Always On Display feature on the outer screen, and show the time, date, and notifications on the screen when the phone is turned off.

Especially the high experience of the large screen on the multimedia and gaming side is complemented by the sound system. The two speakers located on the upper and lower edges of the phone go beyond a smartphone and deliver tablet-quality sound. The loud volume is complemented by the wide ambient sound effect and ear-filling sound. The Treble is a little extreme at the loudest volume, while the bass is balanced. Samsung claims that Z Fold 2 users will not need a Bluetooth speaker, which the company does not seem unfair in this claim. The AKG headset with USB-C tip, which we see on the S20 and Note 20 models out of the box, also offers a sound experience with an adequate headset. If you wish, Samsung's wireless headphones will also work well.

  Operating System and Process.

Samsung has included the Snapdragon 865 +, which is Qualcomm's current processor, in the Galaxy Z Fold 2. This guarantees the level of performance we expect from high-end smartphones. It also allows you to use up to four applications fluently at the same time, to switch between applications without getting stuck, without starting the application again.

Regarding the GPU, Galaxy Z Fold 2 has the Adreno 650.

In Geekbench 5, the CPU scored 980 for single-core and 3149 for multicores.

According to the operating system, Galaxy Z Fold 2, which comes loaded with Android 10, has Samsung's One UI 2 user interface. The user experience on the cover screen is not much different from the S20, Note 20 series devices. On the big screen inside, we see that Samsung is making various arrangements and studies to increase efficiency.

Android does not offer a very good experience when it comes to tablets. That's why we often see various solutions from companies on tablets. Samsung has to do something on its own for the Z Fold 2, which offers a tablet-like experience when opened. First of all, we see that the built-in Samsung applications have been adapted to the Fold's screen. In cooperation with Microsoft, most of the company's applications also work by the foldable screen.

In other applications, it varies from application to application, especially to the internal screen. Here the job mostly falls on the developers. For example, the Instagram application has large gaps on both sides of the screen. Twitter and Facebook, on the other hand, are going to spread the phone view to the big screen. Some applications do not work when opened on the big screen for the first time, they must first be opened on the cover screen. We see that Spotify and some applications like it offer tablet views beautifully. Does each developer do special work for the device that has a high price of 2000USD and will not reach a large user base? If Samsung wants to increase application support, it should convince more developers for this particular form. Or let the company events flow,

One of the most attractive uses of the big screen is to open more than one application on the screen at the same time. You can open up to four applications simultaneously on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. Three applications are allowed to be placed in split windows on the screen. On top of that, a fourth application is opened in the form of a popup window. The use is very smooth with four applications open at the same time, there is no problem. Samsung offers an easy-to-learn interface at points such as the arrangement of the split windows within the screen and the adjustment of the size of the windows. You can save your favorite apps in groups, keep them in the quick access drawer on the side, and open them quickly whenever you want. The quick access drawer on the side is essential for multitasking. If you want to open an application with other applications, you have to drag it to the screen from here. Of course, this requires the application in question to support a split or popup view.

The process of taking screenshots in split windows is also considered. Samsung also allows capturing a single window, not the entire screen. Screen capture controls are also straightforward and users will not have any trouble learning and using them.

Among the screens we saw in the first Fold model, the application continuity feature is also available in Z Fold 2. You can quickly switch between the foldable screen and cover screen for maps, cameras, videos, and even games. Of course, this requires the application to support and enable support for the application from the Maintain applications on the cover screen section from within the settings.

The variant with 12GB RAM and 512GB variant, unfortunately, we have no idea how much it might cost.  It supports either 2 SIM cards or 1 SD card up to 512GB.  Security and Ports.

On the security side, we see that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a power button with a fingerprint reader placed aside. There is no problem in accessing this biometric authentication unit in both smartphone and tablet form. The accuracy is generally high. However, for those who do not find this unit very useful, it is also possible to unlock the screen with a face with the selfie camera on the front or inside. The phone also supports classical unlocking methods such as pattern and passcode.

As for ports, the device supports Bluetooth 5 and NFC. It supports VoLTE and WiFi Calling. It also has no support for a 3.5mm headphone jack like the Z flip.

 Battery and charging.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 provides a powerful Li-Po 4500mAh battery. It has the same battery capacity as Samsung's beast, the S20 Plus. And the phone offers fast charging.

It is possible to take a day off with a fully charged battery. Of course, it may also be the case that you won't be able to take out a day on a single charge, as you'll be using the big screen more. Fortunately, it is possible to reach a 40-50 percent charge in half an hour with the 25W charging adapter out of the box. This will help remove a few hours. It is also pleasing to have features such as wireless charging and reverse wireless charging found in Samsung's other high-end phones.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2: Quick Review

Samsung Fold 2 has a- triple-camera on the rear as clarified: 12Mp ( wide with f\1.9), 12MP( ultrawide with f\2.2), and 12MP ( telephoto with f\2.4). Samsung Fold 2 has a single front-facing camera, 10MP ( wide with f\2.0). The cameras come with LED flash, AI support, and HDR. HDR technology will help you when there's sunlight behind you. HDR will edit the photo and balance the brightness.

By day, the shots of the main module are pretty good. The rendering is relatively detailed, well exposed, despite image processing a little too present, as often with Samsung.

At night, the rendering remains usable, with a persistent sharpness despite the image processing still a notch more aggressive. Thus, electronic noise gets the better of the colors, which become dull.

The ultra-wide-angle module of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 offers actionable shots. However, the center of the image remains much more pleasing to the eye than the periphery, which drastically loses detail.

At night, the module manages to produce usable images, but not much more. Thus, image processing takes over and erases the sharpness of the image.

Note that once the "ultra-wide-angle format correction" option is activated - it corrects the distortion - it becomes complicated to frame with precision. Indeed, the differences between what is displayed on the screen, and the result are important. Nothing serious, of course.

The telephoto module of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 takes decent shots. Detailed and well exposed, they are once again smoothed out but widely used.

At night, the photos are drowned out by electronic noise and the colors disappear at the same time. Difficult to count on this module to capture your night outings.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 offers a front module on each of its screens. Both display the same components, namely a 10 Mpx sensor supported by a lens opening at f / 2.2 for a 26 mm equivalent. Both modules offer decent selfies, albeit a bit over-processed. As often with Samsung, the baby skin syndrome is noticed. It is therefore necessary to deactivate the various filters to obtain a realistic image.

The portrait mode is quite good, with relevant digital clipping.

Finally, the mobile manages to shoot in 4K at 60 fps without batting an eyelid.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2: Quick Review

2000USD sales price of the Galaxy Z Folder 2, currently the most expensive smartphone from Samsung as of yet. Foldable phones are a new product segment and the first products are naturally high priced. Although we accept that the price of the Z Fold 2 is high in today's conditions, we have to state that the market conditions make this price mandatory for the foldable phone at the moment.

Fortunately, Samsung offers the processor, the RAM, that will ensure that those who pay so much will get high performance. As we mentioned above, we would prefer 512 GB of storage. Both screens are of good quality, but using the inside screen is extremely enjoyable. Although the wrinkle in the middle is evident under certain conditions, it has almost no negative effect on the visual experience in general. The opportunity to open and use up to four applications at the same time will also allow those who buy Z Fold 2 to use this phone more efficiently. Flexible mods also work really well in certain situations. Its cameras also produce quality photos and videos befitting a flagship phone.

Naturally, with its high price, the Z Fold 2 is not a phone for everyone. First of all, your budget should not be a problem, and your more important needs should be met. Then you have to decide if you really need such a phone. Of course, you may want to use this phone as a flaunting tool as well, with its sleek looks and never-before-seen experience, the Z Fold 2 will keep your attention focused on the environments you enter.
