  TCL 10 Plus: Quick Review

TCL, which released its first smartphone to carry its own brand with the TCL Plex at this time last year, started 2020 with a new series called TCL 10. The company brings new members to this series later in the year. TCL 10 Plus, which we saw in the middle of the summer, was one of them. TCL is an experienced company especially in display panels and tries to reflect this experience to its smartphones. We see that the TCL 10 Plus appeals to those who want a good visual experience at an affordable price. In this article, we will give you a quick review regarding the TCL 10 Plus.

TCL 10 Plus: Quick Review

  Design & Display.

TCL 10 Plus comes in a glass and plastic combination body. On the front, there is a screen glass that curves towards the edges and therefore does not look like high-end smartphones. This structure meets the plastic frame that has been given a metal-air. The back of the phone is also covered with plastic. The plastic surface is slightly rough and this increases the friction slightly, providing a better grip for the phone. The profile thickness of the phone is 8.9 millimeters, but thanks to the front and back curving symmetrically to the edges, the edge profile becomes thinner and the phone looks thinner than it is. With a weight of 172 grams, it is a phone that can be described as light today. The use of plastic has an effect on this. In this way, it does not create a feeling of heaviness and fatigue in long-term use.

There is no protective film on the screen. We haven't noticed any noticeable scratches or wear on the screen during our use. The transparent case comes from the box of the phone. Since we mostly use the phone with this case, its back was protected against the effects of the outside. However, we think that the back will not be damaged easily. With its curved lines and ergonomic structure, the TCL 10 Plus looks so nice that we think you will want to use the phone without a case.

There are relatively thick bezel edges on the lower and upper edge. The selfie camera is placed in the notch in the form of a water drop on the upper edge.

On the lower edge of the phone, there is a USB-C port, microphone, speaker, and tray that houses nano-SIM and microSD card slots. On the upper edge, we see the second microphone and 3.5mm headphone jack. On the right side, the volume keys and the power button are listed from top to bottom. These keys are placed where they can be used comfortably with both right and left hand. It has good depths, it is easily used. A third physical key is inserted in the left edge. This key can also be set to open different applications or functions when pressed once, twice, or three times.

When we look at the back, we see that the classic camera array in TCL's smartphones is preferred. Four cameras are lined up on a horizontal axis. TCL placed a LED flash on both sides of the cameras. A small text has been added under this group, showing the main camera features. As we move further down, we see the TCL logo. The back surface also curves towards the edges just like the screen, thus creating a symmetrical structure.

Even though the base material of the TCL 10 Plus is plastic, the phone does not feel ordinary. It also gives the impression that it is a solid enough phone. Let's not go without mentioning that there are also features such as water and dust resistance.

As far as display is concerned, as we mentioned at the beginning, TCL is an experienced company in producing display panels and it reflects this on its other products. The 6.47-inch AMOLED display of the TCL 10 Plus looks ahead of other phones in the same price segment. Screen resolution 1080 x 2340 pixels. The 19.5: 9 aspect ratio screen has a sufficient pixel density of 398 PPI. Naturally, sharp and clear graphics, pictures, legible texts are waiting for those who use this phone.

The presence of the AMOLED screen gives the TCL 10 Plus an advantage in terms of battery consumption, and it also makes it possible to use a screen feature that we usually see in higher-end phones, such as the constantly on screen. In this way, you can see what time it is without having to turn on the screen of the phone without adversely affecting the battery life, and you can understand whether there is an incoming notification by looking at the icons on the screen.

Apart from that, another contribution of the AMOLED screen is the increase in black color depth. This contributes to the colors to look more vivid and eye-catching. The screen brightness does not reach the eye-catching level as in high-end smartphones at its maximum level. However, it is more than sufficient and sufficient for comfortable use in the outdoor environment. Moreover, the brightness is so sufficient that it also allows the screen to offer HDR support. You can enjoy HDR support on popular content sources such as Netflix and YouTube. The TCL 10 Plus screen works really well when watching popular content on Netflix with higher picture quality and details.

By the way, TCL's special display technology called NEXT VISION is also available. When you turn on this technology, the brightness is increased a little more, the tones of the colors are strengthened. This way a better visual experience is achieved when viewing photos, watching videos, or playing games. You can also enable the SDR to HDR converter for standard videos. On the other hand, you can manually adjust the color mode or temperature of the screen from the same settings. You can also activate the reading mode, reducing the blue light, especially when reading e-books or newspapers, making your eyes more comfortable.

It is a bit surprising to see a single speaker in the TCL 10 Plus, which surpasses the averages of its class with its display. The sound output of the single speaker on the lower edge does not exceed smartphone averages, it is not considered too high. However, TCL tried to increase the environmental sound effects and saturation as much as possible. The effect of the bass is also felt a little, but we observe that highs can be uncomfortable at very high volume. Headphones are not included in the box, but you can use any headphones you want thanks to the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top edge.

On the other hand, the Super Bluetooth feature offered by TCL on other phones will help to increase the music experience. You can connect the TCL 10 Plus to four audio devices at the same time, thus bringing different music listening experiences to life. By connecting four Bluetooth speakers, you can turn the 10 Plus into a party tool, or you can connect Bluetooth headsets to the phone with up to four friends and enjoy music without disturbing anyone. For the settings of this feature, it will be enough to take a look at the Bluetooth settings of the phone.

TCL 10 Plus: Quick Review

  Operating System and Process.

The phone offers extremely fast and powerful processors.  TCL 10 Plus offers a good processor for daily use. TCL 10 Plus is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor. The phone generally offers sufficient performance for daily work, but you may experience occasional wait while in use. On the gaming side, the TCL 10 Plus does not have any problems with playing games that do not require much graphics power. You can also play games like PUBG Mobile with low graphics settings, fluid, and fast reactions.

Regarding the GPU, TCL 10 Plus has the Adreno 610.

In Geekbench 5, the CPU scored 309 for single-core and 1366 for multicores.

According to the operating system, the TCL 10 Plus comes loaded with Android 10, we see a customized user interface called TCL UI. TCL was the first to showcase its customized user interface with Plex. Now we see that it has made remarkable changes in the user interface with its new phones. Although the wallpaper and elements like that, as well as the dark hues offered by default, the air in the TCL Plex, is protected. However, with some small touches, an air is given a little closer to pure Android.

In the early versions of TCL UI, the grouped application menu was featured. The apps installed on the phone were classified according to certain categories, not alphabetically. The TCL 10 Plus also has such a layout, but if you wish, you can choose the layout without the application menu, where the application icons are placed on the home screen with the components.

When we look at the quick settings panel, we see that shortcuts of useful tools such as screen recorder, one-handed mode, dark mode are also placed. On the other hand, TCL has also used the Edge sidebar on the 10 Plus model, which Samsung has made available on phones with curved screens and then added to each phone. There is a drawer on the right side of the screen, and when you drag it to the center, you will see a sidebar where you can add shortcuts to your favorite applications. While using the TCL 10 Plus, this drawer didn't get much of our attention, but some users use it on Instagram, Twitter, etc. They can use it to easily access popular applications.

Google apps play a leading role in the experience. There are applications such as Gmail, Maps, Calendar, YouTube, YT Music in the Google folder. An application called TCL + is an area that allows you to get to know other products of TCL and get news from the TCL world. We also see applications such as file manager, Music, Weather, Compass. Even a shortcut for NXTVISION has been added to the home screen.

We also see an application similar to the performance management application we see on other smartphones in TCL 10 Plus. Thanks to its Smart Manager, you can allow the applications that open automatically, you can see the battery level and turn on the power saving modes, You can improve the multitasking performance of the phone, especially by cleaning from the memory section.

 Storage, Price, and available colors.

TCL 10 Plus price depends on the selected variant. The basic variant of the phone with 6GB RAM and a 64GB variant. The variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB variant. While the variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB variant.  Unfortunately, we have no idea how much this phone might cost.  It supports either 2 SIM cards or 1 SD card up to 512GB. It is available in Blue, and Violet colors.

 Security and Ports.

On the security side, the TCL 10 Plus also offers an in-screen fingerprint reader. Adding fingerprints is fast. However, the first time the hit rate is slightly below average during use. For the fingerprint to be recognized, you need to press your finger lightly for at least 2 seconds and hold it. It may take some time to learn this. If you want, we can also use facial recognition. As we always say, although this increases practicality, it will lower the level of security. The phone also supports classical unlocking methods such as pattern and passcode.

As for ports, the device supports Bluetooth 5 and NFC. It supports VoLTE and WiFi Calling. It also has support for a 3.5mm headphone jack like the Realme 6 Pro.

 Battery and charging.

TCL 10 Plus provides a powerful Li-Po 4500mAh battery. It has the same battery capacity as the Samsung's beast, the S20 Plus, and slightly more than the P40 Pro Plus 4200 mAh. And the phone offers fast charging.

This battery can easily take a day off at normal intensity use. In fact, if you use the phone sparingly and switch the screen brightness to automatic, it is possible to reach a single charge performance between 1.5 and 2 days. In cases where you do not use the phone much, it may be possible to go up to four days on a single charge. In other words, a phone with a long standby time.

The TCL 10 Plus is stated to have Quick Charge 3 support. However, the charging adapter that comes out of the box does not have a very impressive fast charging performance. It takes more than half an hour for the phone's battery to reach 50 percent in a short time, but it reaches 70 percent in an hour. It takes two hours for the battery to reach full charge.

TCL 10 Plus: Quick Review

  TCL 10 Plus has Quad rear cameras, 8MP( utrawide with f\2.2), 48MP ( wide with f\1.8), 2MP ( macro with f\2.4), and 2MP ( depth with f\2.4). On the front, you see a 16MP camera with f\2.2.

When we look at the camera application, we see a sequence we see in other branded phones. There is a capture button, camera switch button, and shooting modes on one side of the screen. On the other side, there are shortcuts like flash, aspect ratio, filters, and settings. If you want to take 48-megapixel full resolution photos, you should go to the Other section of the image modes and choose the High pixel option. The settings in Pro mode are also rich. You can see the TCL watermark in the photos we took, but you can turn it off in settings.

In general, we liked the photos we took with the TCL 10 Plus. You can automatically adjust the exposure and color settings by taking advantage of artificial intelligence-based image modes. Satisfactory photos are obtained under sufficient lighting conditions. The color temperature is a little above average, and the brightness is not too extreme. If you are not satisfied with these settings, you can turn off the artificial intelligence mode or take advantage of the professional model. When shooting at night or in low light, the noise level, ie noise, is relatively low. There is almost no turbidity. In general, you can take beautiful landscape photos at night.

It is not possible to get very close to the subject in close-up shots, but if you want to take very close-up shots, you can activate the macro mode and shoot in this way using the 2-megapixel macro lens. Although the resolution is low, you can still get impressive close-up photos. We also found portrait shots successful. There is a good distinction between the front subject and the back object. The color and brightness level of the ultra-wide-angle camera is not consistent with the main camera. The level of detail is low, the exposure is higher, and the colors flee to the colder space. Taking 48-megapixel full resolution photos don't have much of a joke either. Because there is a lot of loss in detail. It would be best to stay at the default resolution of 12 megapixels.

The 16-megapixel camera on the front includes features such as f / 2.2 aperture, 1080p video recording. The camera is generally capable of taking satisfactory selfie photos. We can say that we find low light performance sufficient.

On the video side, 4K video can be recorded up to 30 frames per second. There is no optical image stabilization, but TCL has added an electronic image stabilization system (EIS) to its camera system. It can also be used in shooting 4K video. As we see it, it does its job adequately. The vibration effect is reduced as much as possible while holding the phone steady or moving it. TCL 10 Plus looks suitable for 4K shooting. We can say that we also find the sound recording quality good.

TCL 10 Plus: Quick Review

TCL 10 Plus offers a design like we see in high-end smartphones. It was interesting to see the curved screen at this price line. Instead of glass and metal, there is a choice of materials that combine glass and plastic. Quality is naturally not at the level of high-end phones, but there is a material quality, durability, and design that can compete with phones in its segment. Although it is a curved screen, incorrect clicks are rarely encountered during use. Its lightness is also a plus in use.

Of course, one of the most important elements that distinguishes this phone from other products in the same segment is its display. The brightness of the screen is not very high, but we can say that it is at a satisfactory level. With its deep blacks and vibrant colors, a high visual experience for its class awaits TCL 10 Plus users. HDR support is also a significant plus. We wish there were two speakers, but TCL tried to make the single speaker to support the screen as well as possible. The 3.5mm headphone jack is also among the pluses.

The 4500 mAh battery is one of the strengths of the TCL 10 Plus. But it's a handicap to arrive with the Snapdragon 660. This processor is now obsolete and may not meet the needs even for mid-segment phones in today's conditions. While the TCL 10 Plus seems adequate for daily work, occasional hitches and delays do appear. This is even seen in the user interface.

We liked the quad rear camera in general. You can take satisfactory photos with insufficient lighting conditions that will be appreciated on social networks. Its performance in low light is also good. Video performance is also a plus of the TCL 10 Plus camera system. There is a camera performance in high places for its class. TCL 10 Plus will work easily for your special days. What do you think? Have you used a smartphone? Do you recommend it? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
